The block decides.

Everything a buyer will complain about eighteen months later — a colour that drifts between pallets, a filled hole that opens, a slab that will not bookmatch — was decided at the bench, before anyone cut a tile. We quarry our own block, so the decision is ours to answer for.

02 — The cut

Vein cut or cross cut.

Cut across the sediment layers and the stone reads as straight lines. Cut along them and it opens into cloud. Same block, same quarry, two completely different floors — and a supplier who cannot tell you which one your container holds is not quarrying anything.

03 — The fill

Filled inside. Unfilled outside.

Travertine is porous by definition; that is what it is. Resin-filled surfaces belong indoors. On an exposed terrace the honest answer is unfilled and tumbled, because water that cannot leave the pore is what splits a tile at the first frost.

01 — Cross cut

Cut along the layers.

The saw runs parallel to the sediment bedding and the face opens into the cloudy, flowered pattern most people picture when they hear travertine. It hides jointing well and is what a hotel lobby usually buys. It is also the cut that exposes more open pore per square metre, which is why the fill specification matters more here than anywhere else in the range.

02 — Vein cut

Cut across the layers.

Turn the block ninety degrees and the same stone comes out as straight, continuous banding — striato. Architects specify it because it lines up across a wall and reads as one surface rather than as tiles. It costs more per square metre for one reason: a block yields far less usable vein cut than cross cut, and the offcut does not become something else.

03 — Bookmatch

Two slabs, one drawing.

Consecutive slabs off the gang saw are mirror images of each other. Numbered and kept together, they open like a book across a wall; split across two containers by a trader, they are just two slabs that nearly match. Every Petrarra bundle ships in cut sequence with the block number on the frame, because that sequence is the entire value.

Six lines, split the way stone is actually bought.

An importer does not order travertine. They order a format: calibrated tile for a floor contract, slab for a fabricator, split-face for a façade, a fabricated basin for a hotel bathroom. The range below is divided by format and by finish, because that is the axis a purchase order is written on — not by colour, which changes inside every one of these lines.

Honed & Filled Travertine Tile

The volume line. Calibrated modular tile in Ivory, Classic, Light Commercial and Country Classic, honed to a soft matt and filled with a colour-matched resin-cement blend. Sold in 30.5, 40.6, 45.7, 61 cm modular and 61 × free-length. This is the floor a distributor stocks and a contractor lays without thinking about it — which is exactly why the thickness tolerance is the specification that matters.

Tumbled Travertine Tile

The same stone, run through the tumbling drum until the edge softens and the pore stays open. Unfilled by default, which is the correct answer outdoors: an open pore drains, a resin-filled one traps water and lifts at the first frost cycle. Supplied in Light, Standard, Classic Mix, Country Classic (Scabas), Walnut and Commercial. Frost tested to 48 cycles under EN 12371.

Travertine Slab — Vein & Cross Cut

Gang-sawn slab up to 300 × 190 cm in 2 and 3 cm, in both cut orientations, shipped on A-frames in cut sequence with the block number on the bundle. Vein cut for architectural wall and continuous banding, cross cut for the classic flowered face. Bookmatched pairs are kept together; we will not break a sequence to fill a container.

Values are from the current production run on Ivory and Classic, tested to the European methods named in the last column. Where a harmonised standard sets a limit we quote it; where the limit is our own we say so, because in this trade an in-house rule and a CE requirement get blurred deliberately and often.

Denizli travertine is not one material. Values above are for Ivory and Classic from our own benches; Country Classic and Walnut are denser and read differently on porosity and absorption. Ask for the bench-specific sheet before you write a specification against these numbers.

Compliance

The document set an importer opens first.

Natural stone entering the EU is placed on the market against a harmonised standard and a Declaration of Performance, and the values in it belong to a specific material from a specific quarry. The set below goes out with the quotation, referenced by block number so it can be checked against what is actually in the container.
